This is an old idea from the early 2000s which I always thought has a great deal of merit.
It's a short report by Stuart Goldsmith copyrighted 2002 containing a series of rules about how to go from zero to £1,000,000 in 28 steps.
Sounds absurd and scammy but I've read it several times over the years and I still admire its simplicity.
I won't say too much here but if you simply Google the phrase "How To Double Your Way to a £MILLION in 28 Steps" you will find the document so you can have a read.
Back in around 2006/2007 there were several blogs dedicated to this doubling project and although some only had updates for a day or so, others remained online for several months with the authors detailing all their attempts at going from step to step.
I've taken a little time to list some of the best blogs (that still exist) below in the hope that they will fire up some ideas for the readers of this site.
Goldsmith's doubling method is one of several mini-reports he released over the years. Many were listed on his website - stuartgoldsmith.com - and although he still has the site registered, he took down all the content at some point in the last year or so. When I contacted him he confirmed that it will not be restored.
Here are some of the still-live "doubling diaries" for you to read - I've only included ones that lasted for a significant amount of time as there were plenty more where the blogger made three posts, got to 20p and then never posted again:
URL | Current Step | Comments |
---|---|---|
1million-pound-challenge.co.uk | Step 23 | Very detailed site that has been online for several years. Latest update was in 2019, this is also the most far advanced of all the sites that I can find at step 23 (£20k - £40k) which is an outstanding achievement. |
doublechallenge.blogspot.com | Step 13 | This blog was eventually transferred to "money2amillion.com" where the author reached step 17 before the posts dried up. The money2amillion.com site is no longer live but you may be able to find it on archive.org. |
doublingchallenge.blogspot.com | Step 19 | 80 or so updates on this one spanning a couple of years. Some good ideas for making money here. |
doublingmethod.blogspot.com | Step 16 | The author of this blog jumps around and ends up turning it into some kind of betting challenge. Before he goes radio silent he is in the £160-£320 step which is step 16 from the original report. |
doublingmoneyforcharity.blogspot.com | Step 17 | This blog was live for a couple of years with several gaps. Towards the end the rules are skewed to the point where the theoretical money saved from coupons is counted towards the total. Loses its way a little at this point. |
dtamp.blogspot.com | Step 20 | Plenty of updates on this one, once you can figure out how to read it in the correct order. The author became quite ill during the project but did manage some good buying/selling deals to double up. Once he started to trade stocks he wasn't as successful. |
journeytomillions.blogspot.com | Step 17 | This one appears to have reached Step 17 but it has long gaps and obvious lapses in enthusiasm. |
milliondollarsteps.blogspot.com | Step 20 | This blogger sprints out of the gate and quickly gets to Step 20 (around $4,000). He had some great ideas on what to do and was able to make money on most of his investments. The issue he had was with his spouse who comes across as anything but supporting of his efforts. |
onepennymillion.blogspot.com | ? | No real progress on this blog but some of the 2008 posts may be worth a read. Use this blog as inspiration on what not to do. |
thinairmillionaire.blogspot.com | Step 20 | Several updates over a four year period but unfortunately it abruptly stops with talk of a new website that never seems to get launched! |
Hopefully these bloggers haven't given up on their doubling efforts. It would be great to find out that behind the scenes they are further into their march to a million and have just stopped recording their efforts on their blogs.
The concept is great but for many it seems that life gets in the way and the experiment finishes long before Step 28.
